With so many version you would think that it would be confusing, but the main differences between all these radios is the firmware and which options you choose like the battery size, which is upgradeable. The only other difference is the Baofeng UV-5RC and Baofeng UV-5Rax which are 2m/220 144/220 radios. All of the radios have coverage from 130-180 and 430-520 MHZ except the 220 versions. They are wide open for transmit and receive making them usable in almost any VHF/UHF service where you are licensed.

Another nice thing about these radio is that all of the accessories are interchangeable no matter which radio you get. With some of the versions the only difference is the size of the included battery.Whether it be an extra battery or a battery with a higher capacity, or just a speaker microphone and case.

The Baofeng UV-5RE HT

Been watching the 2m/440 dual band HT market for a while now, hoping to find a decent priced radio that I can use when out in the field. I see a lot of great reviews for the Chinese radios that are coming into the states with the best being the BaoFeng UV-5R dual band HT.
Although this is a radio with full open transmit from 100-170MHZ and 400-480MHZ, it still gets great reviews from every ham that has purchased one so far. I see on every Ham blog that mentions it that if you can get past the menu system you have a solid radio that you can get for under 50 bucks.
One recommendation that I suggest is to purchase or make your own USB programming cable. That will ease the setup and make it easier to program all your favorite repeaters into the radio.
The BaoFeng UV-5R 2m/440 HT is a solid radio that can be used out during emergency situations that will provide years of service. And if you break it you aren't out for too much money being under 50 bucks.
Just be careful where you use it since it will transmit on the FRS/GMRS frequencies as well. Some of these can get you int a lot of trouble.

The Baofeng UV-5R under 50 bucks

The Baofeng UV-5R dual band HT

Seeing a lot of hams radio operators that are buying these radios and giving them fair reviews. From what I have seen so far from the different blogs and spots on YouTube the Baofeng UV-5R is a solid made radio with all the basic features you need to communicate on the VHF/UHF amateur radio bands. Not only does it come with a 1800Mah battery but the price over at Amazon is under 50 bucks right now. You can also avoid all the shipping costs from China if purchased this way.

Be sure to get the USB connector and aftermarket dual band antenna with adapter.

The only real complaints I have seen so far is the programming method which is a bit complicated. If you do buy this radio you will want to make (or purchase) the USB cable as well so you can program the radio with your computer, making it a lot easier.
The other issue is the antenna. From what I have read it is a poor antenna at best. You will want to purchase an aftermarket antenna for this radio. Be sure that it is a dual band antenna. Also the antenna connector is the opposite of most found on HT radios, so you will need an adapter.

One thing that really troubled me is the fact that other dual band radio's made by the big three (Icom/Kenwood/Yaesu) will run you several hundred dollars new whereas the Baofeng UV-5R is under 50 dollars ?

The Baofeng UV-5RA programming software

See a lot of questions posted about programming the new 2013 Baofeng UV-5RA with a cable connected to your computer. The biggest of course is how easy is it to program.
From what I understand the Baofeng UV-5RA is a bit less cryptic for the consumer but it is still recommended that you use the programming cable. The cable for the original UV-5R is NOT compatible with the UV-5Ra.

There is also an open source software program called "CHIRP" that is compatible with the Baofeng UV-5Ra radio.

The baofeng UV5RE transmit/ receives from 136 to 170 MHX and 400 to 480 MHZ making it usable for every service within that range, including the Family Radio service (FRS) and the Marine bands. One thing i would recommend is to buy the package that includes the programming cable. Although they have made it easier to program, you still need a PHD to enter the desired frequencies.

I have seen a lot of search hits on my web page the last few days of people searching for information on whether or not the Baofeng UV-5R series of radios are usable on Public service frequencies. The short answer is of course, yes. This doesn't mean to say that it is LEGAL to do so, but yes the Baofeng UV-5R series of radios will transmit from 136 MHZ to 170 MHZ and 400 MHZ to 480 MHZ, all of which falls into the public service bands. If you are licensed to transmit in the Public service domain, such as a Police or Fire department, then the answer is yes.

The United States has a regulating government office called the F.C.C or Federal Communications Commission. This office overlooks the radio frequency spectrum and regulates what radios are used for what service and what set of frequencies.
For instance the Citizens band or CB, which is a band of frequencies from 26.965 to 27.405 MHZ and is channelized from ch #1 to CH #40. They have strict regulations on this band, including amount of power output and modes of operation. On the CB you can only do 5 Watts PEP (Peak Envelope Power) to an antenna. You are also only able to do AM (Amplitude Modulation) and SSB (Single Side Band) on any of the 40 channels. Some operators in this band like to take high power 10 meter ham radio gear and use it on the CB. This is considered illegal in the U.S. and if caught and convicted you could face a large fine and jail time.
The Baofeng radio's are NO exception, and although yes, they WILL transmit in the FRS and Public service bands, there use their is still considered illegal.

 The Baofeng UV-5R is a very popular VHF/UHF dual band radio that a lot of radio enthusiasts

are going crazy over including the prepper/survivalist community.

 Although this radio is usable by Ham radio operators and Public service with a  license, it

is still being used in other services within the VHF/UHF radio spectrum. With open TX/RX

from 130-180MHZ and 400-480 MHZ it can get you into trouble if you are not properly licensed.

bands and Public service bands if you ar eproperly licensed to do so. They can also be used in

the Amateur radio bands 2M and 440 MHZ.

As you can see from the long list, there is a potential to get yourself into a LOT of trouble

if you interfere with any of these services. And this is just with the VHF services.

One idea that I have is to put together a satellite station for under $200 dollars. One way to do this is with the Baofeng UV-5R which is under 50 dollars now. Couple that up with an Arrow dual band VHF/UHF beam antenna and you have a station that is light and portable and in any hams budget.

The arrow antenna includes the duplexer that is needed also, so you wont have to switch coax back and forth as you work the satellites. The arrow antennas also include a hand grip on the end for point and shoot type of operation, so no AZ/EL rotor is needed.

One thing that will be needed is a Female SMA adapter since the Baofeng UV-5R has a reverse antenna connector. That also means that you will either have to buy an special antenna for the handheld or an adapter to use your current HT rubber ducky antenna's with the Baofeng UV-5R series of radios.
