The Baofeng UV-5R is a very popular VHF/UHF dual band radio that a lot of radio enthusiasts
are going crazy over including the prepper/survivalist community.
Although this radio is usable by Ham radio operators and Public service with a license, it
is still being used in other services within the VHF/UHF radio spectrum. With open TX/RX
from 130-180MHZ and 400-480 MHZ it can get you into trouble if you are not properly licensed.
That being said, here is a breakdown of the radio services that can be heard on the
Baofeng UV-5R series of radios.
VHF services
UHF services
Some of the services include GMRS, FRS and Ham radio. These radios CAN be used in the Business
bands and Public service bands if you ar eproperly licensed to do so. They can also be used in
the Amateur radio bands 2M and 440 MHZ.
As you can see from the long list, there is a potential to get yourself into a LOT of trouble
if you interfere with any of these services. And this is just with the VHF services.
